Where to Stay In and Around Bali: From Luxury to Budget

If you’re planning a trip to Bali and feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of places to stay, I totally get it! I spent a month exploring the island, hopping between different areas to really get a feel for the vibe of each place - some of them I even visited more than once. From trendy Seminyak to chilled-out Ubud, and from beachside Canggu to the stunning cliffs of Uluwatu, each spot offers something unique. Here’s a breakdown of the places I stayed during my time in Bali, whether you’re after a luxury escape, a budget-friendly stay, or something in between.

Where to Stay On Bali Island

Seminyak‍

Known for its trendy beach clubs, boutique shopping, and high-end dining, Seminyak is perfect for those who want a blend of beach and luxury. You’ll find a mix of modern and traditional Balinese vibes here, and it’s a great spot to base yourself if you want to be close to the action.

• Pondok Puspa Sumekar (Budget option): A cozy and affordable spot that’s still close enough to the action in Seminyak, without breaking the bank.
• White Penny (Budget option): Another afforable option for solo travelers, White Penny features cozy accommodations with a welcoming atmosphere. It’s close to the beach and local attractions, making it a convenient and budget-friendly choice for those looking to explore Seminyak.‍
• Kayumas Seminyak Resort (Luxury option): Also in the same area as White Penny but on the more treat-your-self side of life is this hidden modern Balinese resort. Private pools, lush gardens, and a great location for beach-hopping or hitting the best bars. I stayed here for two-nights with my boyfriend and it was a totally amazing experience. From cooking classes to couple's massage, the place had it all.

_Canggu‍

Canggu has become Bali’s hotspot for digital nomads, surfers, and foodies. With cool cafes on every corner and a laid-back vibe, it’s the perfect spot if you love a slower pace, yoga, and trendy beach bars. Plus, the surf scene here is strong!

• White Goose Hotel: Perfect for those who love Canggu’s trendy vibe. It’s located right next door to the famous Finn’s Beach Club, which could be either a blessing or a curse depending on how much you’re into partying. You can hear the loud music in your room, but the good news is it ends at midnight, so it’s not too bad! You’re also close to all the cool cafes and surf beaches, with stylish rooms to relax in after a day of exploring.

Ubud‍

The cultural heart of Bali, Ubud is surrounded by lush rice paddies, sacred temples, and traditional villages. It’s a haven for yoga lovers, wellness retreats, and those seeking a slower, more spiritual side of Bali. If you’re after a break from the coast and want to experience Bali’s jungle charm, Ubud is the place to be.

• Kanma Resort: Tucked away in the jungle, this is where you’ll feel completely zen. It’s a great option if you’re craving nature and serenity.
• Puri Garden Hostel (Solo traveler option): Super social and ideal for meeting other travellers. It’s a fun, lively spot with yoga sessions and a pool to cool off in.
• Villa Wayan: This villa had everything you need for a comfortable stay. The rooms were spacious, with a fully equipped kitchen and a private pool. Tucked away in a quiet residential neighbourhood, it’s peaceful at night, but you’re still close to lots of shops, cafes, and restaurants—making it a great base for exploring Ubud.

Uluwatu‍

Famous for its dramatic cliffs, stunning beaches, and epic sunsets, Uluwatu is a dream for surfers and beach lovers. This area feels more relaxed compared to busier parts of Bali, making it perfect if you want to chill, surf, and take in the incredible views.

• Maha Lokha Balangan: Technically located in Balangan, this spot was a great choice because it’s easy to access both Uluwatu and Jimbaran with a short car ride. With stunning views and proximity to Balangan Beach, this is the perfect place if you’re all about the surf and chilled-out vibes.

Sanur‍

Sanur is a quieter coastal town known for its long beachfront promenade and laid-back atmosphere. It’s perfect if you want to escape the crowds and have a more relaxed, local experience. Sanur is also great for exploring the east coast of Bali or catching a boat to Nusa Lembongan.

• Artotel Sanur: I really loved the aesthetics of this hotel, especially the atrium, which was so tastefully designed. Artotel offers a contemporary vibe with a touch of local art, making it a unique place to stay. The rooms are bright and airy, featuring modern amenities that cater to both comfort and convenience. The location is perfect, being within walking distance to the beach and close to the port, which allows easy access to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. The rooftop area offers stunning sunset views that truly stole my heart, along with a lovely swimming pool where you can unwind after a day of exploring.
  
  I also attended their morning yoga on the rooftop, which was a lovely touch that I loved. The onsite restaurant was fantastic, with an excellent breakfast buffet that had lots of different options every day, along with a superb lunch and dinner menu. I stayed here with my parents for 2 nights, and they adored this hotel as well. We had dinner there on our last night, and my mum even said it was one of her favourite meals of the whole trip in Bali!

Where to Stay Outside of Bali Island

While Bali is a fantastic destination on its own, there are a few smaller islands nearby that are worth exploring. During my month long stay in Indonesia, I spent just over a week outside of the main Bali island. If you’re looking to escape Bali for a few days and experience a different vibe, these places are perfect for a quick getaway.

The Gili Islands

Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno are known for their stunning beaches, vibrant marine life, and laid-back island vibes. Each island has its own character:

• Gili Trawangan is the liveliest, perfect for those seeking nightlife and adventure. Known for its vibrant nightlife, sandy beaches, and crystal-clear waters, Gili T is a popular spot for backpackers, honeymooners, and everyone in between. I actually took my parents to Gili T, and despite its reputation for loud parties, we found it perfectly fine for non-partygoers. We all really enjoyed the island’s vibe, with its beautiful beaches and fantastic snorkelling opportunities.
  • Kalua Boutique Bungalows: This boutique stay is a gem, offering cozy bungalows with a tropical garden vibe. It’s the perfect spot to relax after a day of beach-hopping or diving. Plus, you’re close to the island’s lively nightlife without being in the thick of it.
• Gili Air offers a more relaxed and peaceful vibe compared to Gili T. It’s great for snorkelling, diving, and enjoying beautiful sunsets with a chilled-out atmosphere. Gili Air strikes a nice balance between Gili T’s party scene and the more isolated vibe of Gili Meno.
  • Molah Gili Villa: A charming villa that offers a comfortable and serene stay. It’s surrounded by lush gardens and has easy access to the beach, making it perfect for a relaxing getaway.
  • Omah Gili Hotel: With its traditional-style bungalows and peaceful surroundings, Omah Gili gives you a true island feel. The rooms are spacious and cozy, ideal for unwinding after a day of snorkelling or exploring.
• Gili Meno, the quietest of the three, is known for its pristine beaches and romantic vibe. Although I didn’t have the chance to stay there myself, I’ve heard great things about it!

Nusa Penida‍

Nusa Penida is a rugged, stunning island located southeast of Bali. It’s famous for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and epic viewpoints. This island is perfect if you’re looking for adventure, whether it’s exploring hidden beaches, snorkeling with manta rays, or hiking to panoramic viewpoints.

• Nuansa Penida Hostel (Budget solo traveler option): A great budget-friendly stay for solo travellers, this hostel has a chill atmosphere and is perfect for meeting fellow adventurers. It’s located conveniently near the main sites, and you’ll have everything you need to make the most of your time on Nusa Penida without breaking the bank.

Adding a few of these side trips to your Bali adventure is a great way to mix things up. Whether you’re after some beach time, diving, or exploring rugged cliffs, these islands have it all!
