Where to Stay in Penang: Best Hotels for Every Budget in George Town
In this post, I share my top recommendations for where to stay in Penang, covering a range of options from luxury to mid-range and heritage-style accommodations. Whether you're looking to immerse yourself in the artistic streets of George Town or relax in a quieter, more traditional setting, these hotels offer something for every traveler. From the opulent 88 Armenian to the mid-range Citadines Connect and the heritage charm of Noordin Mews, there's a perfect spot for everyone. I also mention the highly recommended but hard-to-book Eastern & Oriental Hotel, known for its lavish atmosphere and waterfront location. If you're planning a trip to Penang, these places will ensure you stay right in the heart of the action!
Where?
Malaysia
Penang, a vibrant island in Malaysia, is famous for its rich culture, incredible food, and stunning street art.
Whether you’re wandering through the historic streets of George Town or indulging in the local culinary scene, finding the right place to stay is essential for making the most of your visit. Here are four fantastic options for your stay in Penang, all located in the heart of the action.
88 Armenian (Luxury Option)
- 88 Armenian: This luxurious boutique hotel is perfectly situated right where all the street art is, in the centre of the heritage area. It has only a handful of rooms, and each of them with a stunning bathrooms, stocked full with Aesop toiletries. The bathtub was simply stunning and I loved it SO much from the moment I stepped in.
Not only that, It also offers a stylish and contemporary atmosphere, blending modern comfort with traditional architecture. You’ll find yourself just steps away from some of the most iconic murals and cultural landmarks, making it an ideal base for exploring the vibrant streets of George Town.
The breakfast at the hotel was also an incredible feast, and the rooms even come with a Bath Butler service, which someone comes to your room to set up a bath for you with your preference of bath salts.
At bedtime, the team also places a little jar of cookies and snacks with a handwritten card on your bed as part of the turn down service. It's the little touches like this that really elevates the staying experience and I'd highly recommend for your next stay in town.
Citadines Connect George Town Penang (Mid-Range Option)
- Citadines Connect George Town Penang: If you’re looking for a comfortable mid-range option, Citadines Connect is a fantastic choice. Located near popular spots like the Hin Bus Depot and a variety of speakeasy bars, it offers the perfect blend of convenience and affordability.
The hotel features modern amenities, including spacious rooms, a fitness centre, and a relaxing lounge area. You'll be close to the buzz of the local nightlife and cultural attractions, making it easy to immerse yourself in the lively Penang atmosphere.
There are two sites nearby to each other, meaning there are a ton of rooms of various sizes to choose from. Some of these are mini apartments that are fully equipped and you'll definitely be feeling at home if you stayed here.
The best part that really made it memorable for me is the free snacks from the lobby. These were nostalgic Malaysia snacks and I really loved this little touch.
Noordin Mews (Heritage Option)
- Noordin Mews: If you’re seeking a slightly cheaper option than 88 Armenian, Noordin Mews is also a great choice. Owned by the same folks as 88 Armenian, this charming hotel retains the heritage vibes that Penang is known for.
The rooms are beautifully designed with a mix of modern comforts and traditional aesthetics, making it a cozy retreat after a day of exploring. Its location offers easy access to the cultural sights of George Town, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds.
I didn't personally stay here but I did have a tour of the place and it looked beautiful! Given that it's run by the same team as 88 Armenian and how great the service I experienced there, I'd definitely want to check this out on my next visit to Penang.
Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang (Opulent Option)
- Eastern & Oriental Hotel: This hotel came highly recommended to me, but unfortunately, I couldn’t get a room for the dates I was in town. However, it looks opulent and beautiful, with a rich history and stunning architecture.
Situated along the waterfront, the Eastern & Oriental Hotel offers luxury accommodations and is known for its excellent service and elegant dining options. If you can secure a room, it would definitely elevate your Penang experience!
