Solo Bar Crawl Through Penang: 5 Bars to Add to Your Next Visit

In this blog post, I share my spontaneous solo bar crawl through Penang, exploring a vibrant array of speakeasy bars. I reflect on the joy of discovering new places and meeting locals without the pressure of finding a romantic connection. Each bar offered a unique experience, from the cozy ambiance of Chez Chez to the artistic drinks at Biso. I also enjoyed the Chinese decor at Magazine 63 and the stunning presentation at Good Friend Don't Bojio. My adventure concluded at Backdoor Bodega, where I savoured a Malaysian twist on a classic drink. This experience reminded me that going out alone can be a fantastic way to explore and connect with the local culture. Cheers to solo adventures!

Embracing Solo Adventures

One thing I realised during my bar crawl is that going to a bar alone doesn’t have to be embarrassing or solely about finding a romantic connection. It can simply be a wonderful way to explore, chat with locals, and learn more about the area. I genuinely enjoyed sitting at the bar, conversing with bartenders about their favorite spots in town and where else I should hit up on my crawl. It transformed what could have been a solitary experience into a vibrant evening full of connections and recommendations.

Chez Chez

First up on my adventure was Chez Chez. As I walked in, I was immediately taken by the cozy vibe. I ordered a drink, and wow—it tasted like pure magic! It was dangerously smooth and didn’t feel very alcoholic, which made it easy to forget I was on my first stop. I chatted with the lovely staff, soaking in the warm atmosphere before moving on to the next gem.

Biso

Next, I headed to Biso, just a short stroll away. The moment I saw the menu, I knew I was in for a treat. The presentation of the drinks was like art on a plate! I took a sip, and it was just as beautiful as it looked—so smooth and refreshing. Biso definitely set the bar high for the rest of the night!

Magazine 63

After Biso, I made my way to Magazine 63. The decor was a delightful nod to Asian and Chinese aesthetics, making it a visually stunning spot to relax. I tried the lychee rose, and it was a refreshing twist that I absolutely loved. By this point, I had made a few friends along the way, as the social atmosphere of the bars was infectious. It was clear that this solo bar crawl was turning into a social adventure!

Good Friend Don't Bojio

As I continued my journey, I arrived at Good Friend Don’t Bojio. The menu was impressive, and I was excited to try another drink. I raised my glass for a toast, admiring the beauty of the ice—it was see-through! The drink was exquisite, adding to the memorable experience of the night.

Backdoor Bodega

Finally, I found myself at Backdoor Bodega. The entrance was unassuming, but I knew from the buzz that it packed a punch. I ordered the Ulam Mojito, and it didn’t disappoint! It was unique and very much a Malaysian twist on a classic, making it a fitting end to my bar crawl.

Reflections

Reflecting on my solo bar tour, I realized how liberating and enjoyable it is to explore at my own pace. I loved the freedom of meeting new people, trying different drinks, and soaking up the vibrant nightlife of Penang. If you ever find yourself in this beautiful city, I highly recommend taking a night to dive into its speakeasy scene. Cheers to adventures—both solo and with friends!
