About this recipe
What Are McMuffins?
McMuffins are one of the most iconic fast-food breakfast items - a warm, toasted English muffin filled with a savoury sausage patty, a perfectly cooked egg, and melty cheese.
They’re simple yet incredibly satisfying, making them a go-to morning favourite for many.
My favourite of the McMuffin selection is the Sausage & Egg McMuffin so today I'll show you how I recreate it at home.
Not only is it easy to make, but you’ll also have full control over the ingredients, meaning no more mystery meat or unnecessary preservatives!

Why Make Your Own McMuffins?
- Healthier: You can choose quality ingredients and control the amount of salt and fat.
- Customisable: Add extra cheese, swap out meats, or go vegetarian.
- Budget-Friendly: Making these at home costs a fraction of the drive-thru price.
- Meal Prep-Friendly: Make a batch and freeze them for quick breakfasts all week!
Ingredients
- 4 English muffins
- 4 large eggs
- 4 slices of American cheese for that classic taste and appearance
- 1 tbsp butter (for toasting)
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Sausage Patties:
- 350g pork mince
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp dried sage
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Pair it with
Instructions
1. Make the Sausage Patties
In a bowl, mix the pork mince with the egg, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, dried sage, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties slightly larger than the English muffins (they will shrink as they cook).

2. Toast the Muffins
Slice the English muffins in half and toast them in a dry pan over medium heat until golden brown. For extra flavour, spread a little butter on them while they’re still warm.
3. Cook the Eggs
To get that signature round egg shape, use a round egg ring or cook them in a lightly greased ramekin in a pan over low heat.
Crack an egg into each ring, and let it cook for about 3-4 minutes. Add a splash of water to the pan and cover it with a lid to steam the top.
4. Cook the Patties
Heat a non-stick frying pan or griddle pan over medium heat and cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until fully cooked and golden brown.
Add a slice of American cheese towards the end of cooking the patties so it has time to melt slightly onto it.

4. Assemble the McMuffin
- Spread a tablespoon of ketchup on either side of the muffins.
- Add the cooked sausage patty with the cheese.
- Place the cooked egg on top of the patty.
- Cover with the top half of the muffin.

5. Serve and Enjoy!
For that authentic fast-food experience, wrap your McMuffin in parchment paper. Now you’ve got a homemade McMuffin that’s fresher, tastier, and better than anything from the drive-thru.

- Make it a meal prep win: Wrap in foil and freeze. Reheat in the microwave or oven for an easy grab-and-go breakfast.
- Go gourmet: Add avocado, tomato slices, or a homemade spicy mayo for extra flavour.
FAQs
1. Can I use a different type of meat for the sausage patties?
Yes! You can substitute pork with chicken, turkey, or even beef mince for a different flavour. Just be sure to adjust seasoning accordingly.
2. How do I store and reheat homemade McMuffins?
Wrap them individually in foil or plastic wrap and store them in the fridge for up to 3 days.
For longer storage, freeze them and reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes or in the oven at 180°C (350°F) until warmed through.
3. Can I make these without an egg ring?
Absolutely! If you don’t have an egg ring, you can use a mason jar lid, a round cookie cutter, or simply cook the eggs freestyle and trim the edges for a neater look.
4. What’s the best way to get that fast-food-style cheese melt?
After assembling the sandwich, wrap it in parchment paper and let it sit for a minute. The residual heat will melt the cheese just like at your favourite fast-food place!
5. Can I make this recipe vegetarian?
Yes! Swap the sausage patty for a plant-based alternative, or use a grilled portobello mushroom or a hash brown for a delicious vegetarian version.
