Teriyaki Tofu Sticks

My most popular tofu recipe by far, and with good reason. The combination of nori seaweed and teriyaki sauce creates this flavour bomb that is delicious and addictive. It's a super easy recipe and the most fiddly part is wrapping the tofu sticks in seaweed individually, but it's definitely worth it. The nori also adds a little extra texture, so if you've never liked tofu, try this and let me change your mind!

Some have also said that the use of seaweed means it takes on the flavour of fish, so I guess this makes it a vegan fish recipe?

About this recipe

Ingredients

  • 300g firm tofu, cut into equal sized sticks
  • 1-2 sheets of nori seaweed, cut to size suitable for wrapping around tofu
  • 30g cornflour (cornstarch)
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar, or honey
  • 3 tbsps light soy sauce
  • 5 tbsps water

Pair it with

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix together your favourite teriyaki sauce and set aside for later use.
  2. Lightly dip pieces of cut seaweed in water, just enough to soften them. Wrap each piece of seaweed around the tofu cubes securely.
  3. Generously coat each seaweed-wrapped tofu piece in cornflour, ensuring all sides are fully covered for a crispy texture.
  4. Heat a little oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Gently pan-fry the tofu until it turns golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  5. Once the tofu is crispy and cooked, reduce the heat to low and pour the teriyaki sauce over the tofu. Allow the sauce to simmer, letting it thicken and coat the tofu evenly.
  6. Garnish the tofu with sesame seeds for extra texture and flavour. Serve immediately with rice or enjoy it on its own as a delicious appetiser or snack.
